On the 15th of February 2024, the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, announced the introduction of new names for the London Overground train lines. This change was done to reflect the “heritage and diversity of our amazing city.”

According to Transport for London (TFL) the new names and colours were needed as many travellers find the London Overground network “confusing.”

Though these names were chosen to honour the history and culture of London, the Windrush line was not received with the acceptance it was expected.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: “The new names and colours have been chosen through engagement with passengers, historians and local communities, reflecting the heritage and diversity of our amazing city."

Speaking with Birmingham resident and Chair & Director for Windrush National Organisation, Bishop Dr. Desmond Jaddoo MBE he said:

In correlation to the ongoing issues still happening to the Windrush Generation, on the 16th of April, it was announced a fundraiser was set in place to help pay for Anthony Williams, a Birmingham resident, funeral costs.

Mr Williams came to England at age seven in 1971 and worked with the Royal Artillery for 13 years. He is just one of many who came over from the Caribbean to help rebuild post-war England.

Anthony Williams had been told he was living in the UK illegally and therefore was treated poorly in terms of work, NHS services and welfare.

Like many others, Williams applied for the Windrush Compensation Scheme (WCS). He was finally awarded his settlement but it came three years after he applied with less than the amount he deserved.

Anthony then returned to Jamaica and passed away at St Thomas after battling liver cancer on the 29th of March.

In 2023, Robert Jenrick MP confirmed that in April 2023, 41 of 6,122 Windrush Compensation claimants had passed away before their claims were settled.
