Single-use vapes will be banned at the start of summer to hammer down on the public’s health

On the 24th of October, it was announced that single-use vapes will be banned in the UK in June 2025. This new legislation is put in place in an attempt to tackle the health risks of vaping and protect the lives of young and vulnerable people.

The Tobacco and Vapes Bill was introduced on the 5th of November 2024 and is ‘part of the government’s reform agenda to shift the focus of healthcare from sickness to prevention and will address one of the biggest risk factors driving poor health.’

This Bill will also include the provision about the licencing of retail sales, product information requirements, control of advertising, and provisions about smoke/vape-free places.

According to Action on Smoking and Health, the amount of people using e-cigarettes has grown from around 800,000 in 2012 to 5.6 million in 2024.

People tend to vape as it is seen as a better alternative to smoking and having fewer health risks involved. However, it can still be a danger to people's health and the environment.

Risks of vaping include asthma, lung scarring, organ damage, EVALI (e-cigarette, or vaping, product use associated lung injury), addiction, second-hand exposure, cancer, and many more.

Waste Managed says, ‘You should not put vapes, disposable or rechargeable into the general waste or recycling bin. If at home, you should keep them in a separate container and drop them off at a WEEE bin at your local Household Waste Recycling Centre.’

Speaking to Palliative nurse, Denise Newton, she said, “Peer pressure is incorporated in vaping, knife crime, and cannabis use in the youngsters. They do it because they see it as looking cool. They don’t want to be isolated. If a group of their friends is vaping and they decide they don’t want to do it, that group will then isolate that person. There is also the fear of being ridiculed. If their friends are vaping and they’re not, they (the friends) will start saying “You frightened of your mum?” and therefore rejection from the group.”

She continued, “Overall, I think the health community will tell you vaping is better than cigarettes. In my personal opinion, when I read research papers from different professions in England and America, there is a huge question mark over it. Especially what they call popcorn lungs, it is damaging their lungs and they are saying that over time history will tell us it is not better than smoking and it causes far more damage to the lungs. At the moment, the UK is trying to tunnel vision us into saying it is better. But, I think when it has been about for a few years we will start seeing an increase in lung conditions in the hospitals which will prove that it is damaging their lungs.”
