Paulette Hamilton is a Labour MP for Erdington Birmingham. On the 26th of January 2023, the MP made a statement on Times Radio in response to Isla Bryson, a transgender woman who was convicted of two rapes when a man, that she should be treated “fairly.”
Rose Duffield, a Labour MP for Canterbury spoke out on the Labour Party having a “woman’s problem” when speaking on same-sex spaces but was interrupted by other members.
When asked Hamilton’s take on this situation, she replied: “We have got to be tolerant. We are in a democratic country we may agree or not agree but we have to be able to discuss these things so as a party, as individuals, as women, and as men, that we can work through them.”
This comes from the Equality Act 2010 which states: ‘You cannot be discriminated against because of gender reassignment.’

Hamilton went on to add: “I think at the moment Kier is leading a party where he is listening to all sides of the argument. So I would disagree when you say that the party is just courting the very young because if you look at the last few elections it has actually been slightly older women that have come in.”
With the discussion on women’s rights and respect, presenter, Fi Glover, brought up Isla Bryson: “Isla Bryson was convicted as a man, Adam Graham, of two rapes. Since those crimes, he has begun transitioning and is being held in a segregation unit at a woman’s prison.
“A lot of people do feel uncomfortable knowing who is the more vulnerable. Whose rights need to be respected the most?”
When asked about an opinion of this, the politician said: “This gentleman transitioning into a female, we’re a democratic country we have to treat him fairly. Transition into a woman we have to respect the fact that he is transitioning into a woman. I have to say I would be more concerned about the women in this circumstance.”
